In November 2016 WestWood Spice presented a session at the National Investigations Symposium in Sydney.
Investigating allegations involving people with a significant disability
In this session we explored some the challenges that can present when conducting an investigation into allegations involving someone with a significant disability. Through the use of case studies we illustrated strategies that can be used to ensure that people with a significant disability are able to actively and meaningfully participate in the investigative process.
- what techniques assist in gathering evidence from a person with a disability?
- can you engage someone in the investigation when their capacity to consent to interview is in question?
- what types of supports may assist a person with a disability through the investigation process?
There were also opportunities to raise questions, and to offer insights to the group from participants’ personal experiences.
